HENNET Joins the Mental Health Financing Advocacy Coalition to Advance Sustainable Mental Health Financing in Kenya
The Health NGOs Network (HENNET) has been nominated to serve in the Advocacy, Communication and Coordination Committee of the newly established Mental Health Financing Advocacy Coalition, with the support of the Health Rights Advocacy Forum (HERAF), a valued HENNET member organization.
This appointment marks an important milestone in HENNET’s continued commitment to strengthening health systems, promoting evidence-based advocacy and fostering multi-sectoral partnerships that advance equitable access to healthcare for all Kenyans.
A Timely Coalition for a National Priority
Mental health has emerged as one of Kenya’s most pressing public health challenges. Rising mental health conditions, increasing demand for services and persistent gaps in financing continue to limit access to quality, affordable and people-centered mental healthcare.
While significant progress has been made in recognizing mental health as an integral component of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), sustainable financing remains one of the greatest barriers to delivering comprehensive mental health services across the country.
The establishment of the Mental Health Financing Advocacy Coalition provides a coordinated platform for government institutions, civil society organizations, development partners, professional associations, researchers and mental health advocates to work collectively towards addressing these financing challenges.
Why the Coalition Matters
The coalition represents a strategic opportunity to transform how mental health is prioritized and financed in Kenya. By bringing together diverse stakeholders under one advocacy platform, it seeks to amplify a unified voice capable of influencing national policies, budgetary decisions and health financing reforms.
Its work will focus on advocating for increased government investment in mental health, strengthening mental health financing within the Social Health Authority (SHA), promoting the integration of mental health into Universal Health Coverage and expanding equitable access to community-based mental health services.
The coalition will also champion evidence-based advocacy by generating and utilizing data to inform policy decisions while strengthening collaboration among government agencies, civil society organizations, development partners, healthcare professionals and communities.
Another critical priority will be advocating for investments in Kenya’s mental health workforce to improve the availability, quality and reach of mental health services across all levels of care.
HENNET’s Strategic Contribution
As a leading national network of health-focused civil society organizations, HENNET brings extensive experience in health advocacy, policy engagement, strategic communication, coalition building and accountability.
Serving in the Advocacy, Communication and Coordination Committee positions HENNET to contribute its expertise in developing coordinated advocacy strategies, facilitating stakeholder engagement, strengthening public awareness campaigns and ensuring consistent communication that supports the coalition’s objectives.
Through its broad membership and partnerships across Kenya, HENNET is well positioned to amplify community voices, mobilize civil society participation and strengthen collaboration between policymakers and citizens in advancing sustainable mental health financing.
Building a Future Where Mental Health is Prioritized
Achieving equitable access to mental healthcare requires more than policy commitments, it demands sustained investment, coordinated advocacy and strong partnerships.
The Mental Health Financing Advocacy Coalition provides an important platform for driving these collective efforts and ensuring mental health receives the attention and resources it deserves within Kenya’s health system.
HENNET remains committed to working alongside coalition members and partners to advocate for policies that prioritize mental health financing, strengthen service delivery, and guarantee that every Kenyan can access quality, affordable and people-centered mental healthcare.
Together, we can build a healthier Kenya where mental health is recognized as a national development priority and no one is left behind.
