Turkana’s mobile clinics used to halt operations for days when diesel supplies ran low. Then, Lopeyok Health Initiative joined HENNET’s Green Health Grants program. Today, their solar-powered clinics immunize 30% more children—rain or shine.
This is the future HENNET is building through its Climate-Resilient Health Systems initiative. Launched in January 2024, the program funds innovations that address the climate-health nexus, from water-harvesting maternity wards to heat-resistant medication storage.
The numbers reveal urgent need:
• 58% of member NGOs report climate disruptions to services
• 14 counties face recurring climate-related drug spoilage
• 3X increase in heatstroke cases at Western Kenya clinics
Pilot grantees like Murang’a’s Kangata Program (gold winner at AAPAM 2024) demonstrate what’s possible. Their clay-pot refrigeration system keeps vaccines stable during blackouts at 1/10th the cost of solar fridges.
“These grants aren’t about gadgets—they’re about rethinking health delivery,” explains HENNET’s Climate Lead. Round 2 funding opens this September, prioritizing solutions for pastoralist communities and flood-prone areas.
